Enjoy your coffee maker for longer. Come to the Repair Café for repairs or advice!

Coffee makers are one of the products visitors bring to the Repair Café most often. This is not so strange: coffee is essential to many people. Coffee makers are often used daily and not always with care. These two things contribute to the fact that coffee makers occasionally break down.

Fortunately, repairers in all Repair Cafés have a lot of experience repairing all kinds of coffee makers. In 60 percent of cases, the repairs are also successful, according to the RepairMonitor, in which Repair Cafés register their repair data. In a further 14 percent of cases, the owner receives advice, which they can use to complete the repair later. So, it certainly makes sense to come to the Repair Café when your coffee maker no longer works (as well as it should)!

Common problems with coffee makers

The Repair Café often solves the ten problems listed below with ease:

  • water doesn’t flow
  • water doesn’t heat up
  • switch or other buttons don’t work
  • water leaks
  • hot plate doesn’t heat up
  • machine only serves half cups
  • lights keep flashing
  • the appliance makes a noise
  • the appliance is dirty
  • problem with cord or plug

Solutions for problems with coffee makers

Repairers report in the RepairMonitor that they can often solve the problems by carrying out the following actions:

  • cleaning
  • descaling
  • replacing parts, like brewing unit, o-rings, hose, rubber, valve, condenser, fuse…
  • reassembling or fixing existing parts

Reasons why coffee maker repairs fail

When coffee machine repairs fail (29 percent of cases), it is often because a part has burned through or broken off or because there has been a short circuit. Sometimes, repairers cannot open the machine or find spare parts.

Common coffee maker brands

Repair Café repairers can handle all brands of coffee machines. The brands listed below are the ones they have the most experience with, according to the RepairMonitor:

  • Philips (especially the Senseo)
  • Nespresso
  • Krups (also Krups-Nespresso)
  • Magimix (also Magimix-Nespresso)
  • Bosch
  • Braun
  • DeLonghi
  • Siemens

Gradually fewer Senseos, more Nespressos

In the RepairMonitor, the Philips Senseo is still the most frequently registered coffee maker. Because visitors have so often brought them in, Repair Café repairers now have a solution for most Senseo problems. But in recent years, the Repair Cafés have seen the number of Senseos decline. “We now see more and more Nespressos coming in,” says Frans Snijders Blok, repairer at Repair Café Bussum (the Netherlands).

Like Senseos, Nespresso machines are frequently brought in with the same problem. With the Nespresso, it is leakage. According to Frans, this is because the water pressure in the Nespresso is too high. “It is 15 bar. This only works well with a machine made of good quality material. Unfortunately, this is not the case with the Nespresso. It’s made at rock-bottom prices, and that’s at the expense of the quality of the material. That is asking for trouble.”

Nevertheless, more than 50 percent of Nespressos are still successfully repaired, the RepairMonitor shows. Here too, cleaning and descaling are often enough to solve the problem. So even with a Nespresso, a visit to the Repair Café is undoubtedly worthwhile!

Do not use cleaning vinegar but citric acid to descale your coffee maker

Coffee maker maintenance tips

Do you want to enjoy your coffee maker for longer? Then take good care of it. Some essential tips from the Repair Café are:

  • Regularly clean an appliance. This prevents, for example, dirt from accumulating and causing blockages;
  • Descale it with citric acid or another agent recommended by the manufacturer. Do not use cleaning vinegar – it is too aggressive;
  • Remove the plug from the socket after use. By preventing a device from being permanently connected to the power network, you can significantly prolong its life;
  • Do you have a coffee maker in your mobile home, caravan or holiday home? Take it out before the winter. This way, you can avoid damage caused by freezing.

Give your food processor, toaster or coffee maker a new life!

Our Repair Cafés repairers see many broken kitchen appliances, such as blenders, kettles and hand mixers. But also toasters with a rack that doesn’t go down or a coffee machine that leaks or doesn’t make coffee at all. Fortunately, they can often repair these things in a Repair Café.

A toaster, for example, is successfully repaired in almost half the cases. This is evident from our RepairMonitor, an online system in which repairers from all over the world keep track of the items they repair in their Repair Café. Thanks to this information, we also know why toasters and other kitchen appliances sometimes stop working.

Repairing toasters or food processors

It often helps to clean a toaster properly. If too many breadcrumbs have fallen in, it may no longer be possible to toast the bread properly, or the appliance may start to smell. This can be easily remedied by removing the breadcrumbs. Sometimes, a switch needs to be cleaned or replaced to make a toaster work again. Unfortunately, making repairs isn’t always possible. If the heating element is broken, it has to be replaced in its entirety.

Toasters can often be repaired  at a Repair Café very well.

“We then ask people if they can order such an element themselves. We can help put it in later”, says Joop de Kok of Repair Café Wormerveer in the Netherlands. “What also often happens is that a wire breaks. That’s the simplest thing there is, and we can easily fix it.” Of the 316 toasters entered in the RepairMonitor, 151 were successfully repaired.

With food processors, signs of age often cause problems. Lubricating a switch can solve the problem. Sometimes, the fan blade is bent and can be straightened out, after which the food processor will functions properly again. Of the 217 kitchen appliances entered in the RepairMonitor, 106 were successfully repaired.

Repairing coffee makers

Besides toasters and kitchen machines, visitors to the Repair Café often bring in their coffee machine. Often, these machines are not in good condition and don’t make coffee anymore. These machines are usually cleaned in the Repair Café.

Joop Janbroers of Repair Café Goeree-Overflakkee (the Netherlands), therefore, advises people to service their coffee machines regularly. “Always follow the tips in the manual. If the manual says that you have to decalcify after 20 batches, then you should do so. You can also do it after 21 or 22 times, but don’t make it 50.” Joop de Kok concurs. “If you regularly decalcify a coffee machine properly, it will last for years. And that’s what visitors start doing.”

Visitors are welcome at the Repair Café with coffee makers of all types and brands: Senseos, Nespressos, espresso machines, Moccamasters, etc. You can find more information about coffee maker repair in this article on our website.

You can learn to make repairs

The Repair Café repairers are always willing to explain what visitors themselves can do to ensure that their items last longer. Philip Leenman of Repair Café Bussum (Netherlands) also encourages people to do some tinkering if a piece of equipment no longer works properly. “In many cases, you have written off the appliance anyway. Many people come to our Repair Café with the idea: see if you can still use it. If not, that’s fine too. But you can also do some research and tinkering yourself. Just unscrew the screws as long as you remove the plug from the socket first.”

Several Repair Café repairers also record videos showing repairs. Like, for example, Mick Robson of Alston Moor Repair Café (UK). Mick has a YouTube channel with several hundred repair videos, for example of a breadmaker.

If your kitchen appliance is broken, you can, of course, always bring it to one of our Repair Cafés. “We try to help as many people as possible,” underscores Joop de Kok. “For example, a few years ago, a lady came with a bread baking machine. We took it apart, put it back together, and it worked just fine. A week later, the lady brought us a loaf of bread. That makes doing this work worthwhile, we always say.”

Coffee machines are undeniably the most popular product on offer in the Repair Café. In almost all Repair Cafés you will find them regularly. In more than 60 percent of the cases they also go home fixed with their owners, as proven by the RepairMonitor in which Repair Cafés register their repair data.

Repairing the Philips Senseo coffee maker

As the picture below shows, almost half of the broken coffee machines in this database are from the Philips brand. The vast majority of these are of the Senseo type. The Senseo is a real phenomenon in the Repair Café, which is why in this article we will go into the repair of this kind of coffee machine in more detail.

Millions of Senseo coffee makers sold

According to repairers of Repair Café Delft, the high number of Senseo’s in Repair Cafés is due to the fact that millions of people in the Netherlands have such a machine and to the fact that the device is not very durable. Repairers notice that some parts often break down. This can also be seen in the top 5 of solutions for Senseo coffee machines indicated in the RepairMonitor (see below).

Senseo coffee makers are worth repairing

At first glance, Senseos are sometimes difficult to disassemble. But the Senseo repair manual that was written by Repair Café repairers (in Dutch) clearly explains how to do it. Online you can also find all kinds of disassembly videos that Repair Cafés use. “Searching for the brand name and model number + ‘disassembly’ often gives good results”, says Paul, repairer of Repair Café Zaandijk in the Netherlands.

If a part cannot be repaired, then (unofficial) parts are readily available (e.g. via OnderdelenSenseo.nl, ReplaceDirect of Philips). With the help of an experienced repairer, you can usually easily replace the broken part.

Top 5 solutions for Senseo coffee maker repairs

The RepairMonitor shows the following top 5 solutions for Senseo repairs:
1. Replacing the magnet in the float
2. Cleaning/descaling
3. Replacing the capacitor
4. Replacing the three-way valve
5. Properly tuning it

Magnets in the Senseo often get rusted

Harmen Meijer, repairer from Delft, has a great deal of experience with the first solution. He explains that the float floating on the water serves the regulator of the water level. The device receives a signal if the water level is too high or too low. “When the magnet stops working, the machine will not know whether there is enough water in it, so that it will no longer make coffee.”

The Senseo’s magnet is not stainless, but it is mounted in water. The repairers in Delft call this a production error because the magnet will inevitably have to be replaced in the long run. There are also rubber or plastic coated magnets.

The Senseo magnets are easily attained on the internet at Onderdelensenseo.nl and on cheap Chinese websites. On the left image below you can see an example of a (rusty) magnet in the float, in the middle image a new magnet.

Stronger capacitors would improve the Senseo coffee maker

Besides this magnet the capacitor (see photo above on the right) quite often also stops working over time. Harmen has already been able to replace it in many Senseos with a stronger version. “The capacitor breaks down because it will no longer be able to handle the voltage peaks properly in the long run. Ideally, Philips should supply its Senseos with stronger capacitors.”

User tips for the Senseo coffee maker

Harmen has several tips to extend the Senseo’s life. He considers Senseos to be vulnerable coffee machines and recommends that they be treated with care. This can be done by removing the plug from the socket after use due to the voltage peaks.

According to Harmen, the interior should not be overburdened either and should be descaled regularly. This can be done with special descaling agent or citric acid. Be careful using descaling agents with mineral acids such as sulphamic acid, sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid or acetic acid. These can damage the machine.
